Mercado San Antón

In the heart of Chueca, this market is full of surprises and is well worth a visit. Although it originally dates back to the 19th century, after it was knocked down it was rebuilt in 2011 to create a modern building with areas to buy food and also restaurants. The market is spread over three floors: On the first floor, you can buy all kinds of foodstuffs, and there is also a gastro bar where you can sample some sophisticated tapas. The second floor has a wine bar and 10 show cooking / take away stalls, where you can try and buy all kinds of different cuisines from Greek to Japanese dishes, seafood, sweets and pastries, milkshakes, and juices. This floor also houses the Ibero-American Institute of Finland, a space that hosts various cultural initiatives. The restaurant La Cocina de San Antón is on the third floor and is divided into four areas: the chill-in area where you can enjoy the best snacks and tapas; the indoor restaurant for lunch or dinner, which serves up the best national and international recipes; the chill-out area called "El Cielo de San Antón", where you can enjoy a variety of cocktails, wines and snacks, and "El invernadero de San Antón”, an ideal restaurant for smokers. The Mercado de San Antón also represents a new model of sustainable market, in which the central skylight acts as a huge photovoltaic energy collector and the floor is made from molten basalt, an originally recycled material. There is also a collection system that reduces the volume of organic waste by 80%. The market has free Wi-Fi on all floors.
