Fundación MAPFRE

The Fundación MAPFRE is a non-profit multinational, founded in 1975 by the eponymous Spanish insurance company to provide support for cultural and other humanitarian causes primarily in Spain and Latin America. Headquartered in Madrid, the foundation owns several buildings and exhibition spaces worth visiting, including the grand Sala Recoletos – located on its namesake street just north of the Plaza de Cibeles. Primarily dedicated to the plastic arts from the late 19th century through to the World War II across 1000-square-meters of exhibition space, the building also hosts an impressive permanent collection of 65 works by iconic surrealist Joan Miró as well as other temporary exhibitions. Just next door, the MAPFRE documents its own industry’s history in the Museo del Seguro, or Insurance Museum, for those interested in the subject.
