Photobastei is a temporary space dedicated to photography. Located on the second and third floors of a building that used to belong to the Academy of Arts in the former industrial part of Zurich, Photobastei's original idea was to give lesser-known photographers a place to showcase their art, while fostering exchanges and experimentations. Photobastei organizes exhibitions that are well curated and often showcase famous artists (e.g. Vivian Maier), and has now become a darling of the alternative Zurich arts scene, whose members are avid participants in Photobastei's many presentations, discussions rounds and occasional parties. There's a nice coffee shop/bar with plenty of books on photography to while away or meet people and talk art.
Admission prices depend on the exhibition. Closed in summer from mid-July to early September (check online).
