Memorial Against War and Fascism

A harrowing, public sculptural display of suffering and loss, recalling the darkest time in Austria’s history – this memorial plaza comprises works by sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka considering and representing different aspects and events of the Second World War and the experience of fascism in Austria. Controversial when it was first unveiled in 1988, it has since become a lauded part of the city’s memorials to a scarred and unforgettable time not just in Vienna’s but the world’s history.
