Capuchin Church

With its construction dating back to 1599 and completed in 1632, the Kapuzinerkirche (Capuchin Church) in Vienna – officially named for Saint Mary of the Angels – is famous for housing the Kaisergruft (Imperial Crypt), containing tombs of over a hundred members of the Habsburg royal family, including dozens of emperors and empresses. A surprisingly small and unassuming building in the inner city, about halfway between the Museums Quartier and the Stephansdom, this site – still a functioning church today – is nonetheless of great historical importance for Austria and the old world of empires and kingdoms.
